You Know What’s Beautiful?

Dear Franz

You know what’s beautiful? Restraint. Making a choice. Not having it all. Just think about it. Owning only a pair of clothes while choosing to lose every free moment inside the pages of books which cost a fortune. Or living in a one-room apartment in the far suburbs while choosing to spend on travelling the world. Or…. or…having just one meal a day so that a family of four on the pavement can have the other. Or foregoing the idea of hangout with friends to spend time with your grandmother who has dementia. Denying oneself something seemingly wonderful to be able to have something more valuable demonstrates a rare depth of character. It is beautiful…..perhaps more beautiful than never making or having to make the choice.

Why am I telling you this? Frankly, I don’t know. And that’s the best part. To be able to let you in on the most insignificant, inconsequential thoughts spinning through my head without reticence.

Laura
